I recently decided that I want to move into the occupational safety and health field. I'm still not exactly sure where I want to end up in the industry, but what would be some important career steps I should take to help me get a safety job?

People take all sorts of different paths to reach the safety job of their dreams. However, these are some of the things I would consider doing if I was trying to break into the safety field:

1. Obtain some safety training. You have both online and offline options. Many people who are busy with full-time jobs choose to take online safety training, so they can complete it at their own pace. OSHAcademy, an online safety training organization, allows you to take training for free and at your own pace. You only need to make a purchase if you want to receive certificates.
2. Seek out opportunities to receive additional safety responsibilities. Volunteer to be on or start a safety committee. Make safety recommendations and show the steps that need to be taken to implement those recommendations. This will allow you get the foot in the door and prove yourself and move forward in your career.
3. Potentially consider getting a degree in Occupational Safety and Health. An online university who offers a great program for safety professionals is Columbia Southern University (and some of OSHAcademy's programs allow you to receive tuition discounts and credit).
4. Look into obtaining a safety credential from ISHM or BCSP. You will need a lot of experience and other requirements under your belt, but it's a good goal to work towards.

Hope this helps, safetylady!
